The average American will spend over 90,000 hours working in their lifetime. This is second only to sleeping – which you spend over ⅓ of your life doing. Without even thinking about any other reasons, this is ahugereason you want to be in a job and career field that you enjoy. It’s hard to be happy when you spend eight hours a day doing something you don’t like.
Before you know it, the months and years have clicked by and you have become stagnant and complacent in a job that is not serving you in your happiness. If you know that it’s time to focus on being in the right career, here are 5 things you need to do in order to start moving towards something greater:
Figure Out What’s Frustrating You
When they get to the point of extreme frustration, a lot of employees are so ready to jump, and they don’t even take time to figure out where they need to jump next. They just know they want out of their current situation and that it’s not working. However, it’s important that you figure out what is making you frustrated and unfulfilled before you move on to the next thing. These are clues on how to pick the next opportunity correctly.
Take Time to Self-Reflect
Most unfulfilled career situations are the result of a faulty career foundation. You took the job for faulty reasons that were not based on you or what you really wanted and needed. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what the field is…if it doesn’t fit you then it just doesn’t fit you. So how do you know what is for you? Get in a quiet place and reflect on what things interest you. What items take away all sense of time? What are the things that come easy to you? This place of self-reflection will be monumental in helping you figure out what to go and do next.
Explore and Talk to Others
As you narrow down options for a plan going forward, seek wise counsel from your family, friends and other experts in your field. Hear about their career journey and lessons learned. This collaboration is essential to you having a complete picture of things to think about and plan for.
Decide on an Exit Strategy and Plan
This is a critical actionable step that is necessary to move forward. If you stay at the other steps, you only have the knowledge to move forward without any real activity. This step is where action takes place. You decide what, when and how your exit will be and then solidify a plan to execute your decision. It’s very easy at this stage to just sit and sit and not do anything. But you must press forward to make a decision on what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it.
This journey towards something greater will be rewarding if you follow these steps in this order. Remaining stagnant and frustrated without employing these strategies will only keep you stuck where you are. Life is meant to be lived and not just tolerated. Our careers take up a significant amount of time in our lives and you owe it to yourself to have the career and life you want and deserve. Start today towards something greater.
